Technique: Murakumo - scattered cloud is a type of bo-maki shibori (pole-wrap resist) where a kimono cloth is stitched lengthwise into a tube by seaming both selvedges. A tubular cloth is slipped on a bo, pole, which is slightly smaller in circumference than the tubular cloth. The tubular cloth is pushed down on the pole scrunching straight to obtain horizontal lines or slightly twisting to obtain the diagonal lines as seen on this tenugui. Arashi shibori is a kind of bo-maki shibori where a narrow and long piece of cloth is diagonally wound around a pole. Murakumo shibori is relatively quick to master and execute; thus the process is frequently repeated using different colors to create a more complex effect. Process photos are from the book "Traditional Japanese Shibori Techniques" by Asako Sakakibara. © 2012 [OUT OF PRINT]
