Stitched & bound-resist in horizontal band of sunrise pattern

Technique: Hinode Shibori - Small circular, sunburst shapes are repeated horizontally by stitching and tightening rows of half circles along a fold on the weft of the fabric. The completed stitched and gathered fabric is fitted around a piece of rope with selvedges facing or touching. While keeping the cloth and rope fastened and taut, the piece is bound top to bottom in intervals of a few inches. After initial placement of the stitched and gathered fabric on the rope core, resist binding is applied from top to bottom in ¼ to 1/2 inch intervals. The amount of space between the resist-thread binding determines the amount of white areas in the ground. / Tesuji Shibori (hand pleating with or without a rope core) / Tatsumaki Resist (binding resist over a long tesuji shibori-shaped cloth).  Process illustrations are from the book “Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing”  by Wada, Rice, and Barton.
