Folded-edge stitch-resist on bamboo pattern

Technique: Ori-nui Shibori - Folded-edge stitch-resist / Yatara-miura Shibori - Randomly placed soft outlines of small resist-bound shapes. Small portions of cloth are gathered on a hook shaped specifically for this process and bound with cotton thread to create a soft outline resist. Process illustrations are from the book “Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing” by Wada, Rice, and Barton. (c)1983

Pattern: Take - Bamboo, one of the Three Friends of Winter (Saikan Sanyou), a symbolic art motif of Pine, Bamboo & Plum, the plants known to be able to endure the harsh conditions of Winter. The motif is popular in many East Asian countries; in Japan, it often goes by the nickname Sho-chiku-bai (directly translated as pine-bamboo-plum / 松-竹-梅). It represents steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. Sho-chiku-bai motifs are commonly seen around the New Year season.
