Technique: Sekka Shibori - Cloth folded and clamped between triangular boards. The design varies depending on which sections of the triangle are dyed.
Pattern: Kikko - Tortoise Shell, an auspicious pattern of hexagons representing longevity (The crane lives 1,000 years; the turtle lives 10,000 years.) The pattern originated 1,400 years ago in the Chinese mainland and was reserved for the ruling class. The lower classes were not meant to wear or even look at the pattern, but it spread to commoners when the warrior class became prominent during the Edo period (1600-1868). The kikko pattern appears in many variations in all forms of craft and in print. and is still popular to this day.
