Parallel running- stitch resist, woodgrain checkerboard pattern.

Technique: Mokume Shibori - Created from parallel running stitches along the weft gathered and scrunched to create a resist in a wood grain pattern. Process illustrations are from the book “Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing” by Wada, Rice, and Barton. (c)1983

Pattern: Ichimatsu - Checkerboard pattern, named after 18th-century kabuki actor Sanokawa Ichimatsu, who frequently wore the pattern, which had been used centuries and gone by different names, such as genroku mon'you. It appears in multiple applications of Japanese design, including architecture, landscaping, pottery, weaving, and lacquerware.
